Augsburg Day TripFrom Romans to RenaissanceFounded 2000 years ago by the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar, after whom it is named, Augsburg is one of the oldest European cities north of the Alps, and is one of the most beautiful locations on Germany’s famous Romantic Road trail of evocative “old world” towns and scenery. Augsburg’s long and fascinating history has placed it at the centre of the major currents of the European story for the past two thousand years – the rise and fall of empires, war, the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the struggles of the modern world. Much of this history can be felt today as you walk the beautiful old city streets and squares and see the churches, museums and public buildings. Your guide will accompany you there and back and show you the major sites in the historic town centre. Highlights include: the beautiful Renaissance town hall with its famous Golden Hall; the beautiful Fuggerei, one of Europe’s oldest housing complexes, and the location of a WWII air raid shelter; the cathedral, and where Martin Luther publically defended the Reformation. The day trip is divided into two parts: a guided tour (approx. 2 hours), followed by 3 hours free time in which you have leisure to visit sites of your choice. In addition to the group tour, the guide will be on hand to give personal tips and advice, and will issue you with maps. Please note that admission fees to various sites are not included in the tour price.
